The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Purdie & Dixon),
Williamsburg, June 29, 1769.

RUN AWAY FROM the SUBSCRIBER at Williamsburg, about the 15th of May last, a likely stout mulatto fellow, about [?] years of age, formerly the property of Matthew Moody, jun. has for some time worked in the ferry boat at Burwell's ferry, is fond of going by water, and may probably hire himself on board some vessel; wherefore I caution all masters of vessels, and others, not to harbour him or carry him out of the colony. I will give two pistoles reward for taking him up, and pay sixpence a mile for carrying him from the place he is apprehended at to Goochland courthouse; and if it is inconvenient for the taker up to carry him, he may deliver him into the jail of the county where he takes him, and shall be entitled to the reward. He is a very sensible fellow, will endeavour to make his escape, and it will be necessary to have him in irons. DAVID ROSS.
