A NEGRO wench called Poll and a Negro man named George, were taken up in company with a Dutchman who called himself George Hendricks and pretended to be their master, and was committed to the gaol of this county on suspicion of felony; since which time the said Hendricks has made his escape, and the Negroes have been tried, found guilty of petit larceny, received their punishment, and still remain in gaol, having confessed their master to be one John Rice, a Gentleman of North-Carolina, and Naval Officer there. This is therefore to desire the said Rice, or other person to whom they belong, to come and prove their property, pay charges, and take them away. JOHN BOWYER, Sheriff of Augusta. N. B. They are likely young slaves, and seem to be about 20 years of age.
