The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Rind),
Williamsburg, December 22, 1768.

CUMBERLAND county, December 10, 1768. RUN away from the subscriber, some time in March last, a likely Virginia born Negro wench, named SUE, of a middle size, a very black complexion; she has a hitch in her walk, as if she had been hurt in one of her hips, very plainly to be discovered when she walks fast, and is about 28 or 30 years of age. The said wench has never been heard of since she left me, and I am afraid some dishonest person has conveyed her to some foreign parts, and there disposed of her as their own property. Whoever apprehends the said wench, and delivers her to the subscriber, or to Mr. Richard Adams, in Richmond Town, shall receive forty shillings reward, besides what the law allows, if taken in Virginia, and five pounds if taken out. JOHN POINDEXTER.
