Williamsburg, March 17, 1768.

DECEMBER 8, 1767. COMMITTED to the gaol of Lancaster county, a new Negro man named JAMES, who says that he is a free man, and will not own that he has any master; he appears to have been in the country for some years, and has a past as a freeman several months before he was taken up; he is a slender fellow, with a round face, grey headed, much scarr'd on his back and breast by whipping; has had holes in his ears, talks bad English, and is about 45 or 50 years of age; he says that he came from Philadelphia; had on when committed, a blue half thick waistcoat and breeches, osnabrigs shirt, country made shoes, and hose. The owner may have him again, paying fees, and the charge of advertising, as the law directs. ROBERT HENING, jun. Gaoler.
