The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Rind),
Williamsburg, February 4, 1768.

Essex county, Tappahannock, Jan. 21. RAN away from the subscriber, last Christmas was twelve months, a Negro fellow named TOM, about 24 years old, about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, well made, has middling large hands and feet, full faced, is a very black Negro, and had on when he went away such clothing as labouring Negroes usually have; tho' it is likely he may have changed his cloaths and name, and endeavour to pass for a freeman, as I have been informed he has frequently gone up and down the rivers, in vessels belonging to Mr. William Meredith, in King & Queen county, who has Negro skippers on board his vessels. Whoever apprehends the said Negro, and brings him to the subscriber in Hobb's Hole, will receive 40 shillings, if taken in Essex county, if in any other county, three pounds, and if out of the colony, five pounds. WILLIAM PORTER. N.B. All persons are forewarn'd from entertaining the said Negro.
