The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Purdie & Dixon),
Williamsburg, February 5, 1767.

RUN away in December last, a Mulatto wench named VENUS, about 17 years of age, has a scar on the elbow of one of her arms, by a burn, and another on the upper part of her forehead, occasioned by a blow from the handle of the windlass of a well, and is remarkably strong and well made for labour; had on when she went away a petticoat and waistcoat of green plains, the waistcoat had metal buttons and button holes instead of a lace before, and without skirts. I imagine she is either harboured by other slaves in kitchens and quarters in and about town, or else gone for Nansemond county, from whence she was purchased a few years ago. Whoever apprehends the said slave, and delivers her to her master, shall have THIRTY SHILLINGS reward. WILLIAM CARTER. Wmsburg, Feb. 4, 1766.
