Official Records - House of Burgesses Journals
The Virginia House of Burgesses regularly considered petitions from individuals seeking compensation for capturing slaves. In addition, slave or servant masters whose runaways were killed while being pursued, or who died in jail, often sought compensation for the lost value. The House Journals contain records of these petitions.
The Journals are broken down by year. Click on a year below to see the Journal entries.
