Will of Elizabeth Coles
August 1864

I, Elizabeth Coles of Charlottesville in the county of Albemarle do make the following to be my last will, thereby revoking any and every other will I may have made.

1. Under the will of my brother Tucker Coles, dec'd, I am entitled at the death of his widow, to a legacy of one thousand dollars, I believe; but whatever may be its amount, I hereby give and [bequeathe] all my rights to the said legacy, to my nephew John C. Rutherford.

2. In consideration of the faithful serviced of Catherine Alexander (a free woman of color) I give and bequeath to her such a sum as will be equal to fifty dollars a year from the 1st day of January 1860, until the time of my death, should she remain with me so long; but should she quit my service, I direct my Exc.[executor] to pay her at the rate of twenty five dollars per year from the date aforesaid until she shall leave me. This is not to be in satisfaction in whole or in part of the wages I am paying her, or may hereafter agree to pay her.
