Because Free Black surnames were recorded by many different individuals over a period of several decades, there is a great variety of spellings recorded in the Minute Books. This list of surnames is provided to assist in researching family names that may have been recorded with unusual spellings. For example, individuals belonging to the ‘Goings’ family may be recorded in eight related spellings including Goen, Goens, Goin, Goins, Going, Goings, Gowen and Gowing. A researcher wanting to find a particular individual would begin by searching under each of the eight different spellings of ‘Goings.’
