Nineteenth-century newspapers reflected and shaped the political desires and possibilities of the day. Virulently partisan, the editors constantly searched for ways to exploit any advantage they perceived in the political trends. Almost every event was interpreted in light of political interests. These images give an overview of how different parties used language to address the vital questions of the emancipation era.
