Roanoke Fire Department Dispute
|
|
No sound for the first 36 seconds. Interview with unidentified fire fighter. Part of a dispute following the firing of W.M.
Mattox, head of the Roanoke Fire
Fighters Association, by Fire Chief Sydney Vaughan. Vaughan cited "insubordination,
slander, and public displaying of his disrespect for his superior officer while on duty"
as his reasoning. Mattox had called for a referendum on a 56 hour work week for fire
fighters instead of a 73 hour week. (Washington Post, October 18, 1963)
