Governor Almond Vows to Fight
(WSLS Television, Roanoke, VA)

Governor Lindsay Almond addressed the people of Virginia in Richmond after the State Supreme Court ruled against massive resistance laws. Almond launched one of his staunchest attacks on school integration in the speech. In this clip, Almond drew on Cold War rhetoric to amplify the danger desegregation posed. This speech, which Almond would later regret for its vicious racial denegration, marked for many the nadir of massive resistance in Virginia and opened a new tone of deep seated resistance.
