Interview with a Norview High Student
|
|
A WSLS reporter interviewed Delores Johnson, a 16-year-old junior, in front of a crowd of
white students as she prepared to enter Norfolk's Norview High School. The school had been
closed since the previous September when the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals denied an
appeal to give Norfolk's schools a year's stay in integration. Johnson did not expect the
schools delayed opening to affect her chances to go to college and become a pediatrician.
She avoided provoking any negative response from the white crowd by declining to answer
what the integrated schools meant to the larger society.
