Roanoke County Superintendent Outlines Integration Plan
|
|
No spoken word. File footage of Roanoke County School Superintendent Arnold Burton.
Burton outlined the school board's plan for integration of schools in Roanoke County that
would take effect in September 1966. It proposed the division of the county into
geographical districts with children to be assigned within their district. Three all-black
schools would be totally abandoned, and the students would be re-assigned to formerly
all-white schools in their district. Burton's plan called for the black faculty to be
absorbed by the integrated schools. Claiming the integration was forced, Burton maintained
that, "We are trying to set up district lines the court will approve." (Roanoke World
News, March 8, 1966)
