Freedom Riders Leave Roanoke
|
|
No spoken word. Five Freedom Riders, three white men and two black men, prepared to leave
Roanoke on their way to Chattanooga, Tennessee. (New York Times, July 15, 1961) WSLS
identified one of the men as Herman Stern, a Jewish rabbi from New Jersey. According to
WSLS, the Freedom Riders claimed they were, "testing both segregated and desegregated
waiting rooms and lunch counter facilities on their bus ride south."
