Roanoke Development Association Meeting
|
|
No spoken word. H.T. Delaney, a retired black judge from New York, spoke to the Roanoke
Development Association, telling the audience that blacks were not moving fast enough
toward integration. The independent candidate for the U.S. Senate, Dr. Lousie Wensel, also
spoke to the organization. She derided Senator Harry R. Byrd for keeping Virginia small in
every way. At the meeting, members of the Association voted not to trade with two Roanoke
businesses because they refused to hire blacks. (Roanoke World News, September 29, 1958)
