Howard Gilmer(Ted Dalton) Campaign Speech
|
|
This film was labelled "Howard Gilmer Campaign Speech" in the WDBJ files; however, it
appears that this speaker is not Gilmer who dropped out as a candidate for Attorney
General in May 1957. Gilmer was a "machine" picked candidate who gave few speeches on
substantive issues before withdrawing. Lindsay Almond is shown at the end of the film.
This speaker, perhaps Ted Dalton, who was running for governor, considered it ridiculous that
Virginia has "spent a million dollars and lost every case in court" on the desegregation
cases. He criticized "the machine" politicians (the Byrd Organization) for "lulling the
people to sleep" with assurances that the Pupil Placement Law or massive resistance
would work. He claimed that "Virginia is in a crisis."
