Lindsay Almond Campaign
(WDBJ Television, Roanoke, VA)

Various footage of J. Lindsay Almond, eating watermelon. Almond's gubernatorial campaign in 1957 provided a vigorous debate over the wisdom of massive resistance policies. His Republican opponent, state senator Ted Dalton from Roanoke, argued that some integration was necessary and probable in the face of federal court orders and the Brown decision. Dalton claimed that he was no friend of integration, but that the state's massive resistance campaign was irrevocably harming public education. Almond defended the policies and accused Dalton of failure of principle and nerve in the face of a crisis.
