Interview with Robert Crawford and Oliver Hill
|
|
Robert Crawford, president of the Defenders of State Sovereignty and Individual
Liberties, considered the issue of massive resistance to school integration a case of
"states' rights." Oliver Hill called the Interposition Resolution a "hullabaloo" that
did nothing but "deceive the public and create a false impression of the validity of
segregation." Hill called segregation "immoral" and "uneconomic." Segregation, he said,
"violates Christian principles." Hill predicted that the passage of the Interposition
Resolution in Virginia would bring "anarchy" and make Virginia more like Mississippi and
South Carolina, where by implication there was social choas.
