Danville Demonstrations, Arrests
|
|
Reverend Lawrence Campbell indicated that the sit-ins at restaurants and other places
in Danville were necessary to desegregate the city "at large." Campbell called for an
end to discrimination and segregation not only in municipal and state facilities but in
all public accommodations, especially "chain" stores, such as Howard Johnson's.
Demonstrators at sit-ins were arrested and carried off in stretchers and loaded into a
police paddywagon as they practiced non-violent resistance.
