Danville Demonstrations,
Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth Speech
Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, drew a clear connection between the Cold War defense f freedom in Berlin and the need for freedom and equality in Danville. "We don't need guns," Shuttlesworth called, "these are the weapons of a people who are afraid." Shuttlesworth, preaching non-violence in this rousing speech, argued that the "Negro has gotten rid of his fear, he's not scared of anybody." Shuttlesworth put faith in God who would be "a friend" in time of trouble.
