U.S. Census - Charlottesville and Esmont Communities Basic Search
You can search either the 1870 or 1910 U.S. Population Census for Charlottesville and Esmont, Virginia. Two interfaces have been provided to search the census, a Basic Search and an Advanced Search. The Advanced Searches for 1870 and 1910 have been separated due to different data types recorded by census-takers. For example, in 1870, census-takers recorded information about a person's occupation, birthplace, and ability to read and write. Many of these questions were asked again in 1910, but new information was obtained about a person's housing, marital status, offspring, and additional questions asked about employment. As a result of these differences, two separate Advanced Search pages have been provided to search the specific fields for each year.
This page allows users to search only basic information found in both the 1870 and 1910 censuses (name, age, sex, "color", and occupation). If you would like to search other fields found in either census (such as the dwelling number, rank in household, page number in the census record) please use the Advanced Search for the specific year you wish to search. You can access an Advanced Search of each year of the census by following the appropriate link below. If you would like to search both census years simultaneously for an individual, use the "Search Both Census Years" link below.
Note: A wildcard search is available. Wildcards - inserting "%" - allow you to expand your search. For example, searching for "Sm%th" would return both "Smith" and "Smyth". See the Tips for Searching page for information on using a wildcard in searches.
