Transcript of Letter to Margaret [R. Bullitt?], 1917

Dear Miss Margaret
I just got home to day from up Mr Riches after / three weeks [quiet?] tonight
I am up Windieknow Master Willey Miss Salby / is from home  will be back
tomorrow  I found your letter / home when I got there I
wrote to you last week by now / you have gotten my letter
I have been feeling much better / some ways but I am verry
thin when I [coff?] Miss Mary / said I wasent looking as well
as she would like to see me / I am not goin to go as I have
been doing it is now half pass / ten mas W- gone to bed I have
been heming up his new pants / Which was too long [darning?] A
pear of socks which he and

found had been eaten badly / by A mouse nex I had to
mend the lining in his over coat / and he is reading to me from the
paper. he said I wonder if you / can fix the button holes in that
coat if you cant I dont know / who can.  I couldnt find any
black threat so I dyed some / with ink made A all right [job?]
he will go in to Charlottesvill tomorrow / somthing goin on Mas John will
go with him he will spend the / night with Miss Mal Miss
Salley expect to kill hogs nex / week I will help her then I will
kill it take so much corn / I raised A good crop from the
land which was in [gour?] but / I want bread also.  thank your
mom I have plenty to eat which / I raised such as potatoes salad
few cabbage peas can fruit / so you see I am doing verry
well hope you will soon / be here and help to enjoy

him M Rich got back from / his [hunt? Aunt?] Wensday evening
Killed A great many [portreges?] / I am so glad Mr William
have come and of the war / and that Miss Lib is paying
them A [viser?] I have too / ladies wating for A answer
from me if I can wate on / them I will have to say no
it is so near XMs and / busy times I being away
so long have kept Jeff from / his wirk all of this good
weather but for that I beleave / I would go [ten?] A week do
verry well these high times / all of my people are so
good to me but Miss M you / know I must wirk and from
home is eaiser than home / I know I am not oblige to leave
home still I like that kind of / wirk well any way if ever
soalgers Com woonded and / I can go I surely will go than

fresh meat and take some / to Miss Evie the boys keep me
with pocket change and / I have the money saved to
pay my last taxes.  I am / only wating untill Miss Libbie
com.  I thank you for thinking / about them but I didnt think
it was time I will find out / Miss Lib sent to me the
ticket  yes mam I have James / home. and expect to keep him
he give no trouble his case is A / pitifull one when I am from him
he miss me and having no one / to corect him and as A child he
must do somthing so he picks / his clothes and socks and
shoes which are [twice?] as he / wont ware any other kind
that is the most trouble I have / with him   I have to make A
new start with him in that / way every tim I stay from

mas W say he have heard nothing about the
barrel.  say you may / get here befoore it com as
fraite is so slow I found / the paccage at home from
Miss Evie and I wore the / coat up here tonight in it
was under ware from James / one soot will go on him
tomorrow as I havent washed / for three weeks other things
will be alright and help / me from buying and when
I be sick the dollar will be / for nox weeks meat and
sugar  I will write to her / Sunday this is friday night
I found A new calf it is / pretty cold for it but I am
goin to keep it in A warm / place as it is A female

and I will have milk / this winter it sent such
A good cow not like / dasey its mother now
if you were keeping house / here would be your
milk do you expect to / spend Christmas here
or go to miss Evies with / those children  I wish I could
do something for your families / each one for they are so
generous and kind to me / now twelve oclock I
will close with my verry / best love to you and
every one of the family
